Scris de Raluca LUCACEL & Adriana BĂBAN on . Postat în Volumul XVIII, Nr 2

ABSTRACT

Nowadays, the number of elderly individuals is rapidly increasing compared to other age groups. However, young people tend to have a negative perception concerning elderly individuals. However, young people's perception concerning elders is most of the time a negative one. The way seniors are perceived by others significantly affects the manner in which they are treated. Our study sets out to explore young adults’ perceptions and knowledge regarding aging. One hundred and sixty-seven participants were included in the present study. Findings show that the majority of participants had poor knowledge, negative perception and negative self-reported behaviours regarding old age and the aging process, conceptualizing it like a bad thing that cannot be avoided. These results have implications for intervention programs that promote a positive perception of old age and the aging process.
