ABSTRACT

The purpose of the present study was two-fold. Firstly, to determine the construct validity and reliability of the Hungarian version of the Perceived Motivational Climate in Sport Questionnaire (H-PMCSQ-2). Secondly, the current study aimed the exploratory examination of sport category (individual vs. team) and gender differences in perceived motivational climate in sport. Large number of studies can be found regarding the motivation of athletes. The original PMCSQ-2 questionnaire is widely used in sport, due to its convenience in measuring motivational orientation, motivational climate (Task-Involving, Ego-Involving), and achievement goals. The adaptation of the questionnaire in Hungary was achieved with a long process. First of all, it was tested on a smaller sample (N=150, mean age 15.22 ± 2.3 years) of athletes. Taking the conclusions of that measurement, the questionnaire was revised and tested on a bigger sample (N=614, mean age 16.32±1.21 years) as well. After the statistical analysis, it was concluded that the Hungarian version of the questionnaire is adequate regarding the criteria of validity and reliability and can be used to measure athletes’ perceived motivational climate. Results showed significant differences between team sport athletes and individual sport athletes.
