FOSTERING NON-ATTACHMENT AND DIS-IDENTIFICATION VIA THE ENHANCEMENT OF SELF-AWARENESS

ABSTRACT

Most of us form attachments to people, objects and ideas. We may also identify with them. Self-reflection, as fostered by psycho-analysis, Gestalt therapy, mindfulness meditation, etc., may enhance self-awareness (or mindfulness). This in turn may enable us to dis-identify from dysfunctional ideas, habits and attitudes, and to let go of attachments which no longer serve useful purposes. However, detachment may be fostered defensively by some people and increase social isolation.
